Fabrication information modeling: interfacing building information modeling with digital fabrication

Abstract Digital manufacturing methods have been successfully used in different industries for years and since had a positive effect on the development of their productivity. These offer significantly greater design freedom make it possible to develop shape-optimized function-activated components. In construction industry, however, these technologies are only being reluctantly, even though additive could resource-efficient possible. The possibly decisive disadvantage is that higher granularity product process information required, thus increasing planning effort. A circumstance framework described this study, fabrication modeling (FIM), mitigate by linking digital BIM-based building via chain. For purpose, FIM provides methodology with which model can be detailed, component component, fabrication-aware manner. Based open exchange data format IFC, integrates seamlessly into BIM context enables automated detailing information.
